Vacuum Double-Cone Rotary Drying Technology Empowers Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling, Solving the Challenge of Drying and Purifying Crushed Materials

Recently, as the recycling of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries from the new energy vehicle industry has reached a peak in scale, vacuum double-cone rotary drying equipment—with its low-temperature, high-efficiency, environmentally friendly, and safe characteristics—has been widely adopted in the drying process of crushed lithium-ion battery materials. This technology effectively addresses industry pain points associated with traditional processes, such as oxidation pollution, high energy consumption, and low black powder purity, thereby helping to improve quality and efficiency throughout the entire lithium-ion battery recycling process.
After end-of-life lithium-ion batteries undergo crushing and sorting, a mixture of positive and negative electrode black powder containing electrolyte and moisture is produced. This material is highly heat-sensitive, prone to oxidation, and contains volatile organic solvents, making the drying process extremely demanding. Traditional hot-air drying often leads to material oxidation and degradation, as well as electrolyte evaporation and pollution. In contrast, the vacuum double-cone rotary dryer employs a composite process combining vacuum negative pressure, low-temperature indirect heating, and double-cone rotary agitation. Operating under a high-vacuum environment of -0.092 MPa or higher, it lowers the material’s boiling point to 40–80°C, enabling rapid low-temperature drying.
During operation, the dual-cone drum rotates at a constant speed, causing the crushed material to tumble uniformly 360° within the drum. This ensures full contact with the jacket heating walls, eliminating thermal dead zones and effectively preventing localized overheating and caking. Simultaneously, the vacuum environment isolates the material from oxygen, preventing oxidation and discoloration of black powder, and maximizing the retention of the activity of metal materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Evaporated electrolyte and moisture are condensed and recovered via a condenser, with a solvent recovery rate exceeding 95%. This not only reduces raw material loss but also achieves near-zero emissions of exhaust gases.

The widespread adoption of vacuum double-cone rotary dryers will drive the transformation of lithium battery recycling toward higher efficiency, environmental sustainability, and higher value-added processing. This approach not only meets environmental regulatory requirements but also enhances the quality of recycled metal materials, providing critical equipment support for the circular economy in the new energy industry.
